Need-To-Know Facts on Genesis and Our Series

Genesis is the story of how the entire universe began. In this book, we learn where we came from, why we were created, how our civilization and its many constructs and institutions were established, and how it all went wrong. Most importantly, though, we learn about the Almighty God of the universe, who created us in His image and loves us deeply. We learn about His character and His glorious plans.

Who wrote it? Moses

When was it written? 1440 and 1400 B.C.

What’s the setting? Primarily in Canaan and Egypt

Why was it written? Scholars believe these stories were conveyed during the 400 years the Israelites were in Egypt—stories such as the epic journey of Joseph or the detail given to the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob), which provided hope for the Israelites in their time of great affliction under the oppressive rule of the Egyptians. In order to pass down the story of God’s faithfulness as well as the promise He made to Abraham, Moses recorded it down through divine inspiration.
