Faith and Truth

And it is after all only by faith that our minds accept as fact that the whole scheme of time and space was created by God’s command—that the world which we can see has come into being through principles which are invisible.”—Hebrews 11:3 (PHILLIPS)

Believe it or not, we accept a lot of what we experience in our daily life by faith. What kinds of things? Well, by faith, we accept that our cars won’t explode when we turn the key or push the start button. By faith, we accept that our chairs won’t collapse the second we sit in them. By faith, we go to sleep at night with the expectation that we will open our eyes the following morning.

My point is . . . we live our lives by faith in a lot of things. And yet, so many people find it hard to accept by faith that there is an Almighty Creator who created this universe. So many people accept on faith—without any conclusive or observable scientific evidence—that the universe has no intelligent design; that it all just came into being by accident.

This seems crazy to me. By faith—backed by what I consider to be the logic and reason of a well-informed, intelligent mind—I believe that there is a God who created the universe. By faith, I believe that “that the whole scheme of time and space was created by God’s command.” And by faith, I believe that this same God who brought the universe into existence out of nothing has revealed Himself to us through His Word and made a way for us to become His children through the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, His Son. By faith, I believe that His Holy Spirit indwells me and that His power rests upon me.

Here’s the thing, I know why some people can’t accept it: “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness” (1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV). As believers, we need to pray for those who don’t yet know Him. We need to pray that others would hear the call of God and respond with repentance and surrender. And we need to be available for the Spirit to use us. Then, the Spirit will open their eyes and they will, by faith, see the wonder and beauty of God’s creation as we do!

DIG: What kind of things do people generally accept by faith? What have you always accepted by faith?

DISCOVER: Why is it the “natural man” considers what we hold so dearly and understand as truth to be foolish? What makes it so hard for some people to accept? How can you help them come to see the truth?

DO: Pray the Lord would use you to speak truth and help someone come to faith in Him.
