The Geography of Heaven Part 5

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne . . .”—Revelation 5:11 (NKJV)

The geography of heaven is starting to take shape. We started with God’s throne at the very center of heaven—surrounding His throne are 24 other thrones where 24 elders sit. We also saw seven flames representing the Holy Spirit’s presence before the throne. And at each corner of the throne hovers a fantastic creature covered in eyes with three sets of wings and four faces.

This brings us to the next group of beings described in John’s vision, “many angels around the throne.” Of course most of us assume that there are angels in heaven, but watch how God’s Word describes this scene: “Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands” (Revelation 5:11 NKJV).

John describes their number as “ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.” The apostle wasn’t putting a precise number on it, he was actually using a hyperbole to convey the idea that this mass of angels was so great that it was impossible to calculate how many there actually was. In other words, there were more angels surrounding God’s throne than you could count!

May I remind us that just one angel was responsible for slaying 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night (Isaiah 37:36)! Moreover, whenever you see an encounter in Scripture between a human being and an angel, the result is always fear and panic (on the part of the person!) Angels are mighty, awesome, and can be downright terrifying to human beings.

Now imagine a multitude of them surrounding the throne of God, more than can be counted, each crying out with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and  blessing” (Revelation 5:12 NKJV)!

It’s more than our minds can fully fathom! But again, as we have seen with everything else in heaven, this angelic army is positioned according to the throne of God. The throne, and He who sits upon it, is the focal point of this mighty multitude.

Let this sink in. More might is amassed around God’s heavenly throne than earth can possibly imagine . . . and it’s unreservedly ready to fulfill His will!
