The Geography of Heaven Part 4

And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures . . .”—Revelation 4:6 (NKJV)

Now we come to the next feature in heaven, and what a feature it is! We have “four living creatures” presented to us. It’s best to just let the Bible describe them: “Four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within” (Revelation 4:6–8 NKJV).

Use your imagination for a moment here. For starters, these creatures are covered with eyes! Have you ever found it difficult to look someone in the eye? Maybe you were guilty or ashamed of something so you averted your focus ever so slightly? Not with these creatures! No matter where you look on their body, there’s an eye staring back at you!

We also see they have six wings. Isaiah was also given a heavenly vision and he too saw these creatures. He gives us an added detail that the six wings are separated into three pairs and each pair is used simultaneously yet differently. One pair is used to cover their face, one pair is used to cover their feet, and one pair is used to fly or hover in place around God’s throne (Isaiah 6:2).

Which brings us to their faces. John saw each of them with a different face, one of a lion, one of a calf, one of a man, and one of an eagle. That, in and of itself, is strange. But the Prophet Ezekiel was also given a glimpse of these creatures and he describes them as each having four separate faces of a lion, ox, man, and eagle (Ezekiel 1:10)!

If one of these creatures appeared to us this side of heaven, it would probably send us straight to heaven! Our lives would be forever changed. Yet as awesome as these creatures are, watch what occupies them: “They do not rest day or night, saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come’” (Revelation 4:8 NKJV)!

As impressive as these creatures are, they aren’t impressed with themselves! Stationed (presumably) around the four corners of God’s throne, they constantly praise and worship Him! May our lives also be a constant praise to the One who sits on the throne!

DIG: What do we see at the four corners of God’s throne? What does this say about the creativity of God?

DISCOVER: How should their actions inspire us?

DISPLAY: Spend time in worship today, as these creatures do. Sing “Revelation Song” and consider the holiness of God.
