Begins March 14
Over the course of the next 21 days, we’d like to invite you to go deeper in your relationship with God through the practice of fasting.
By definition, fasting is, “the sacrificing of food for a spiritual goal or vision.” The reason for the fast could be the healing of a sick loved one or the breaking of a life-long stronghold. The vision could be divine direction for a key decision or commitment. But the overall goal of a fast should always be to spend more time
with Jesus, to grow closer in your relationship with Jesus, and to become more like Jesus!
Fasting has the power to elevate your prayers and enable you to experience the fullness of what God has for you. The examples are clear throughout God’s Word, but many people tend to view fasting as a spiritual exercise for a select few super Christians.
But Jesus invites and assumes that everyone who follows Him will fast. During His Sermon on the Mount, He even goes so far to say, “when you fast” not “if you fast” (Matthew 6:16 NKJV). Why? Because it shifts our perspective from ourselves to the Lord and draws us into a deeper reliance on and relationship with Him.
As you seek God’s direction on how He would have you fast, please keep in mind that your fast can look like:
Keep in mind; however, that without replacing these things with time spent in prayer and God’s Word, all of this is really just meaningless. Let’s not sell this experience short by making that mistake! Instead, take the opportunity to skip that dinner, or bowl of ice cream, or that TV show, and go for a 30-minute walk and pray. Ask God to do a powerful work of preparation for the next 21 days and pray along with us for a vision that will spread and change your life, your family, this church, and our community forever.
Fasting is truly a game changer for the believer, and I believe as we ramp up to Easter He’s calling us to fast as a church in order to drown out the distractions of the world around us and focus more
fully on Him.
At the end of this journey, as you come back to your normal routine of eating or browsing social media, I hope that as a result of your time with the Lord and your dedicated prayers, you will be able to answer the question, “Who am I now?” with the deepest conviction, “I am more like Jesus!”
