The Honey Trap

Do not fall into the trap of following their customs and worshiping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations worship their gods? I want to follow their example.’”—Deuteronomy 12:30 (NLT)

Have you ever heard of a honey trap? According to the dictionary, a honey trap is “a stratagem in which irresistible bait is used to lure a victim.” We actually see this employed in the Bible when the Philistines used Delilah as a honey trap in order to discover the secret of Samson’s power and strip him of it.

In context, today’s verse is a warning from the Lord to the Israelites to not fall into the trap of assimilating into another culture and worshiping their gods. He even goes as far as to say, “Do not inquire.” Don’t entertain even the tiniest notion or inkling of curiosity . . . otherwise, the honey trap may become too alluring to resist.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. I truly believe this verse is an all-important warning for this very moment in time. You may be thinking, Danny, I’m not tempted to worship any other gods. I’m not inquiring about Allah or Shiva. This doesn’t apply to me. This is a false sense of security and all part of the honey trap!

You see, I think the enemy knows that trying to tempt believers into denying Jesus and worshiping another religion’s god is not going to work anymore—so he changed his strategy. Today, the idol we’re tempted to worship is culture itself. We’ve allowed culture to inform our view of God, the Christian faith, and the world. We’ve inquired about the cultural norms and societal sway, and for so many, the line between the truth of God’s Word and the lies and sinful ways of the world have become blurred.

As children of God, we CANNOT allow the ways of the world and the lure of cultural “acceptance” to inform our view of God’s Word. Instead, the truth of God’s Word needs to saturate our lives so we begin to view everything through the lens of Christ. We need to accept Scripture as inerrant, unchanging, eternal truths and not allow the world to twist our view of these truths to suit any particular agenda. And we need to be very, very vigilant because the devil is prowling “around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NIV), and he’s employing new and increasingly effective honey traps to make the Church ineffective and irrelevant.

DIG: What are some of the lies of postmodern culture that have begun to seep into the Church?

DISCOVER: How can you stand firm against these subtle attacks and honey traps?

DISPLAY: As you identify the honey traps in your life, and the many lies and subtle distortions of the Word that have seeped into the Church and the modern Christian worldview, pray and ask the Lord to bring a revival of truth, conviction, and passion in the Church. That, through the guidance and revelation of His Spirit, we may be able to cast off the lies, spring the honey traps, and be the light of the world. Pray that the script can be flipped and that it is no longer us subconsciously saying, “I want to follow their example,” but instead the world declaring “I want to follow their example as they follow after Christ!”
