In Awe of the King

“Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him.”—Psalms 34:9 (NKJV)
Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon or hiked the Blue Ridge Mountains? Maybe you have spent time in the Florida Keys or had an opportunity to visit Niagara Falls. The reaction of most when they see these amazing places is wonder, awe, and even a sense of being overwhelmed. When Scripture talks about “the fear of the Lord,” this is what it’s referring to. The way we view the Lord, the way we think of Him, and the way we approach Him should be with a sense of wonder, awe, and grandness that overwhelms us!
There have been times in my life when I have feared situations and people. At these times I go to the beach to watch the waves crash against the shore, and I am reminded of His power and mercy. I see that God created the waves with great power that can be destructive if left on their own; they can also be a source of life when under God’s control. These are times I am in awe and marvel at Him.
We see in Scripture that fear of the Lord helps us from doing evil, is life-giving, and is the beginning of wisdom. Psalms 34:9 says when we have respect for God and His character, we will lack nothing. What an amazing promise!
How can we have this reverence for God? He gave us His Word, which helps us live in relationship to Him. Deuteronomy 10:12 tells us what God requires of us, and the first thing on the list is fearing the Lord. This will help us walk in His ways and do His will rather than think our ways are better than His. We can’t love God the way He wants to be loved without respecting who He is, and we can’t serve Him without understanding our role in relationship to Him. He is the King of kings, the Lord of lords, and He is greatly to be praised! We must keep a right perspective by respecting Him as we serve Him and others.
When we really see life as it is, in response to who God is as our Creator, King, and Father, we will be filled with an overwhelming sense of love, gratitude, and loyalty. Our desires will be His desires, and as the psalmist said, we will lack nothing because everything we desire will be found in God alone.
