Weekend Message Takeaway: “Your Relationships and the Generous Gospel”

This past weekend, we concluded our four-week series “Contagious: The Spread of the Generous Gospel.” In this message, Pastor Doug shared what it means to be generous in our relationships as we examined how God works through the medium of relationships and studied Jesus' example. We also discovered how to experience the deepest fulfillment and joy in our relationships as we honor the Lord and invest in the people in our lives.

Watch the video below to see a few highlights from the teaching and share it with your friends via social media. To watch the message in its entirety, click here.

Let’s recap some of the key talking points from Pastor Doug's teaching this weekend:

Reflection: If you were to ask a friend, would he or she say you are a giver or a taker?

The Hardest Place to be Generous Is at Home: Nothing reveals our selfish nature more clearly than marriage! Why? Because it requires us to cast aside selfishness in order to have harmony in the home. Husbands and wives are instructed to submit to one another, to be generous with respect, prayer, and love for one another. Parents are called to cultivate a generous home and develop strong character in their kids. Children are commanded to honor their parents with the promise of a long life. These principles apply whether you live at home or not. And if you're single but live with roomates, you should be considering your roomate's needs as you would a brother or sister.

  • Do you have a generous marriage?
  • Do you have a generous family?
  • Are you a generous roommate?
  • Are you a generous friend?

Generous People Love Strangers Like Family: The apostle Paul gives us a great example of what generous relationships look like within the family of God. We are instructed to share with God’s people, to be a generous Church. This involves practicing hospitality with one another, praying for one another, speaking words of life and encouragement to one another, and sharing in the burdens of our brothers and sisters.

Application: Share with God’s people. Practice hospitality. Expand your circle. Be a giver in your home and with your home.

Generous People Look for Opportunities to Bless Their Enemies: Are you generous with forgiveness? Are you willing to go the extra mile with someone who isn’t like you? Are you willing to turn the other cheek for a difficult person? Are you willing to give your shirt and coat to a person with whom you disagree? The further out your generosity extends, the more contagious it becomes!

Application: Connect with someone this week. Practice being generous with conversation.

Quote to Remember: If you can’t build a generous home, it’s impossible to build an authentic generous life.Doug Sauder
