“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”—1 John 5:13a (NKJV)
I’ll never forget the following words that were spoken by my Bible College instructor: “Write a term paper answering the question, ‘Can a person know for sure if they are saved and going to heaven?’”
I’ll be totally honest, at that stage of my spiritual journey, I wasn’t sure how to answer that question. Salvation was something I knew God had given me. There was a deep assurance between my heart and His that my sins were forgiven and I was going to heaven. But could any other person know that? Now that was another story!
Maybe you’re where I was back then. Perhaps you read that question and you, yourself, aren’t sure how you’d answer it! “Can I know for sure that I’m saved and going to heaven?”
Fortunately, my instructor suggested we start our research in 1 John. I’m glad he did, because in it God’s Spirit gave me a key that unlocked the uncertainty of this issue. It’s a key I’ve used countless times over the years when questioning my own standing with God, as well as many others who’ve also wrestled with this. This “golden key” is already printed above, but it’s worth repeating: “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Not only can we know we’re saved and going to heaven, but God wants us to know it! It’s right there in black and white—God (through the apostle John) has given us His Word on it. He doesn’t want us confused, unsettled, or less that 100% convinced about this. If you believe in the name of the Son of God, you have eternal life . . . period!
A lot of life can be wasted obsessing over this. Many Christians never find true rest or peace on this point. Their assurance of salvation is like a pendulum swinging back and forth from one day to the next, usually based on their performance instead of on His grace. Don’t be that person. Read what God has written, know that He wants you to know if you have eternal life, and trust in His promise. Remember what Jesus said in John 8:51 (NKJV): “If anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”

DISPLAY: Today, spend time in prayer and worship thanking the Lord for His promise of salvation.
