Unabashed Faith

“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, ‘I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!’”—Matthew 8:10 (NLT)

Have you ever had your mind blown? You know, when something amazing or unexpected happens that leaves you completely floored? One such instance that comes to mind where people had their minds blown was Susan Boyle’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent. If you’ve ever seen the video, Susan was met with skepticism when she took the stage . . . until she started singing. One judge even said, “That was the biggest surprise I have had in the three years of this show.”

I have to imagine that it takes a lot to blow the mind of Christ. After all, He’s the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, the Alpha and Omega, who transcends time. And yet, in Matthew 8:5–13, we see a story where Jesus’ mind was blown by a Roman officer. Here, the man comes to Jesus and says, “Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and in terrible pain” (Matthew 8:6 NLT). When Jesus offers to come to his home to heal the young man, the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed” (Matthew 8:8 NLT). Wow! Reading that gives me goose bumps.

I’ve read this story dozens of times and am still blown away by it. What powerful, totally unabashed faith this man showed. You see, the Israelites always asked for signs, wanted to have some sort of physical, material action accompany their miracles. Here was one who believed in the power of the word of Christ and asked for nothing more.

This is so powerful for us today. Why? Because like the centurion, we are unworthy for Jesus to enter our homes, and yet He comes into our hearts and dwells within us. Unlike this story, Jesus won’t show up in the flesh to answer our prayers or heal our friend . . . but by the power of the living Word of Christ, through which He speaks to us, we have what we need to experience His presence, hear His voice, see His face, and watch Him work. In order for this to take place in your life, you must exercise faith every single day. And when you do, I promise you it will be your mind that’s blown by all that Christ will accomplish in and through you!
