Peace and Love
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”—Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
December . . . Finally, the last month of the year, which many of us would say has been anything but easy. Ideally, December is the month when we celebrate and remember the birth of our Savior and the peace He came to give us. Yet, with endless amounts of to-do lists, shopping lists, and budgeting spreadsheets on our minds, we can easily become busy and overwhelmed during this season. As if decisions about holiday gatherings and making plans with extended family weren’t already stressful enough, doing all of this amidst a pandemic can make it hard to feel anything close to peaceful.
Despite all of this, it’s so important not to forget each other. Pursue unity, togetherness, fun, and intimacy in your marriage, especially during a month that tells you there’s not enough time or money to keep up with its demands. As cliché as it may sound, remember who the real “reason for the season” is, and find your peace in Him alone. Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page of how to allocate your resources this month and, above all, make each other a priority!
Use one or all of the following date night ideas below to show love to your spouse and enjoy a peaceful evening as Christmas approaches.
Date Night Ideas for December
Challenge 1: Bake Something Good
There’s no better time for baking sweets than during the holidays! Whether you plan on baking something for just the two of you or baking enough to give some away to family and friends, plan a night to bake together. Look up some recipes and spend a night having fun, getting messy, and being creative. Start by shopping for all your ingredients together and then get right to the kitchen. Throw on your aprons, put on some Christmas music, and get to baking. Indulge in that sweet tooth and one another!
Challenge 2: Light the Drive
COVID-19 is changing the usual traditions at this time of year, so there will be many more drive-thru experiences with Christmas lights and decorations. Some neighborhoods around South Florida team up to make sure their neighborhood is the most lit and festive of all. County parks and local churches are also doing their own spectacles that are open to the public, so see what’s being planned near you and make it a date! Enjoy the comfort and privacy of being in your car together with lots of time to hold hands, have good conversations, or sing along to the radio.
Challenge 3: Presence, Not Presents
Perhaps you want to give in to the pressure of getting each other something nice for Christmas. Instead, why not just give each other the gift of each other’s presence? Find a Groupon or a local hotel or spa that offers a couple’s relaxation package. Whether you choose to do a couple’s massage or get pedicures together, make it a spa day! Having a day to truly unwind and be pampered together might be the most peace-filled gift you can give this season.
