Watch our most recent mid-week message here.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”—Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
I have a plaque hanging on my wall with an anecdote that reads, “Always let your faith be bigger than your fears.” With our country just coming out of social distancing and a stay at home order, our faith has been tested to its limits. Being tested not to fear, but instead to trust that God is in control.
As we ease ourselves back into society, it’s crucial we don’t keep our light hidden from the world. Just as we read in the above verse, “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl,” our goal is to be a light to those around us—be it in our marriage, with family and friends, or in our community. We must rise our banners high and let them shine for those who desperately need to see them.
You may be thinking, How can I do this? Perhaps you’re struggling with the fear of being rejected or offensive. And that’s understandable. But don’t let that deter you—just keep on shining! Perhaps you can shine your light by making an encouraging phone call or text, going on that long-awaited date night and telling your beloved how thankful you are for them, or checking on a neighbor to see how they’re doing. The goal is to share the love and hope of God; to remind them that things will get back to normal and, hopefully, be better than it was.
This month, the Married Couples Ministry would like to partner with you to help make your light brighter.
Challenge 1: Write a Song
Date nights are about spending time together. So, how about spending the evening writing a love song together? You could write new lyrics to your favorite song and practice singing it as a duet. This will be a fun and creative way of sharing your love story to each other. And if you’re daring enough, video tape yourselves singing it and then enjoy watching it.
Challenge 2: Go Outside and Play
With the weather being nice and warm, it’s time to get outside and enjoy God’s creation! Go on a bike ride around your favorite biking trail, watch the sunset on a levee, or take a walk on the beach—get creative!
Challenge 3: Food Truck Tour
If you consider yourself a foodie or just enjoy tasting a variety of foods, this one is for you. Do a food truck tour, which will allow you to taste and sample foods without having to travel to different locations. It’s a win-win situation for your palette. Enjoy and bon appetite!
