How God Sees Motherhood

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.”—Psalm 127:3 (NKJV)

Take a closer look at the proceeding passage from the Book of Psalms. Notice how it describes and defines children. It uses words like, “heritage,” “fruit,” and “reward.” What do each of these words have in common? They all point to something exceedingly precious.

A heritage is something of great value that one inherits. It conveys the sense of secured provision, much like a property or a fortune willed to someone. Fruit is something we can all relate to. Who hasn’t experienced the satisfaction and refreshment that comes from a fresh piece of fruit when they’re feeling hungry and worn out? And a reward is connected to the idea of receiving compensation. But specifically, compensation for something that has a considerable amount of worth attached to it.

When we add all of this up, we see that God is revealing His perspective of children to us. He doesn’t view them as insignificant or as an inconvenient burden, as our world often does. Instead, He highly esteems their value and worth by comparing them to those things that reflect the very best this world can offer.

But let’s take it one step further. God doesn’t just esteem children like this. If He has such a tremendously high appraisal of children, how highly must He also esteem mothers? After all, He has ordained that children be nurtured and cared for within the context of motherhood. And it only stands to reason that He wouldn’t entrust something as valuable as children to anything that is less precious to Him.

Simply put, God loves moms! And you don’t have to look too hard to find evidence for this in His Word. Whether it’s His providential blessing over Hannah, His attentive ear towards Rebekah, His supernatural provision for the widowed mother of Zarephath, His protection of Hagar in the wilderness, or His divine intervention on behalf of Sarah, Ruth, Naomi, Leah, Rachel, Jochebed, Elizabeth and Mary . . . we see God’s great love towards moms and motherhood manifested in a multitude of miraculous ways!

Which leaves us with this question, “Do I value motherhood the same way God does?”

Maybe you’re someone who’s just taken your mom for granted. Perhaps you are a mother and you’ve thought less of yourself than God does until now. Or could it be that you’ve just never taken the time to consider any of this? Whatever the case, now is the time to ask God’s Spirit to realign your heart to His.
