The Power of a Thankful Marriage
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”—Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV)
Our son just got job as a firefighter! What great news! We are excited and thankful for God blessing him with his dream job.
It’s easy to be thankful when good things happen. But, what about when the “not so good things” happen . . . especially in our marriages? It can be very disheartening when tough times come, so keeping an attitude of thanksgiving even when we feel powerless to be thankful produces power and a peace that surpasses all understanding.
The Bible teaches that we are “rooted and built up in him.” We are given the power through our Lord Jesus to have a happy marriage, and its building blocks are simple: show your love and gratitude by saying, “Thank you.”
The act of thankfulness is like everything else—the more you practice doing it, the better you become at it. Even if your marriage is in a good place, thankfulness will make it that much better . . . and stronger. The power of a thankful marriage is one of the building blocks that makes the foundation of a marriage stand.
This month, the Married Couples Ministry would like to partner with you by helping you build a thankful marriage.
Challenge #1: It’s Time to Serve
With Thanksgiving approaching, how about serving at your local soup kitchen or food pantry together. You can help pack meals being prepared for delivery or help serve meals to those less fortunate. It’ll be an experience you’ll never forget.
Challenge #2: Night of Gratitude
Spend an evening at your favorite coffee shop or restaurant and practice the art of gratitude by expressing all the things that make your beloved special to you. Tell your spouse how thankful you are for them. And remember, don’t forget to bring tissues; there will be tears.
Challenge #3: Act of Thankfulness
This one requires some creativity. Plan a special date night that shows your beloved how much you appreciate them. Do something they have been wanting to do like taking a cooking, painting, or salsa dance class or just taking a moonlight walk on the beach. The sky’s the limit!
We want to hear from you! E-mail MarriedCouples@CalvaryFTL.org about your date night story! Share your dates on social media by tagging your photos with #SoFloDateNight to encourage other couples with what the Lord is doing in your marriage!
