Listen & Love
“Making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding.”—Proverbs 2:2 (ESV)
“Are you listening to me?”
“I feel like I’m not being heard.”
These types of expressions typically come from a spouse who feels unloved, unappreciated, and oftentimes very alone. When not addressed and resolved, these feelings can lead a couple down a destructive path they can’t return from.
Throughout the Bible, we find Scriptures on both listening and loving. Listening is not just about hearing words; it’s more than that. It’s about responding to what you’re listening to. In others words, it means listening and responding in love. If we truly love our spouse, we will listen to their heart and respond by meeting their needs. But, if we are just hearing and not responding, then we’re showing our spouse, even if it’s not intentional, that they are not loved, worthy, or appreciated. No one wants to feel that way. So, the next time your beloved says, “Can we talk?” Take the time to really listen and then respond in love. Actions are much more effective than words.
This month, the Married Couples Ministry would like to partner with you by helping you build a stronger and more loving marriage through these fun challenges.
Challenge 1: Flamingo Road Pumpkin Patch Hang
On October 19, Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale will be hosting a Pumpkin Patch Hang at Flamingo Road Nursery for married couples. What a great way to spend a fall afternoon meeting other couples by picking out pumpkins, going through a corn maze, drinking hot apple cider, and eating donuts! When you get home, have a friendly contest to see who is the better pumpkin carver. Whoever loses has to pay for dinner!
Challenge 2: It’s Time to Leave
Living in South Florida, we don’t get the opportunity to see the leaves change. Why not take a weekend trip up north to see how the green color of the leaves disappear, turning them into those splendid fall colors of yellow and orange. What a great excuse for a romantic weekend getaway for two! Don’t forget to pack a warm sweater and get ready for lots of snuggles!
Challenge 3: Sunset Picnic for Two
With the weather cooling down, it’s the ideal time to have a romantic sunset picnic for two. One of the best places to watch the sunset is at the Everglades. Pack or pick up your favorite meal and beverage, hop in your car, and drive west to the Everglades, where you can enjoy the beauty of the sun setting. Afterwards, treat yourselves to a coffee and dessert at your favorite coffee shop.
