“Then you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho. And the men of Jericho fought against you—also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I delivered them into your hand.”—Joshua 24:11 (NKJV)
The passage above is a continuation of Joshua speaking on behalf of the Lord to the children of Israel. In context, he’s reminding them of all God had done for them. It’s at this juncture that their crossing of the Jordan River and succession of military victories are recounted.
If you’re familiar with the Book of Joshua, you already know this. Israel enters the land and progressively possesses it. But what might not be as familiar is the interesting detail that God gives next: “I sent the hornet before you which drove them out from before you” (Joshua 24:12 NKJV).
Don’t miss this! When Israel was on the offensive and about to engage in battle with the armies of their enemies, God reached into His inexhaustible arsenal and pulled out a most unconventional ally . . . hornets! Psalm 24:1(NIV) tells us that, “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” That truth takes on new meaning here as we see hornets being pressed into active duty.
It’s safe to say that when the enemies of Israel drew up their war plans, they didn’t account for hornets in the equation. But God, in His infinite creativity as Creator, used the insufferable insects to turn the tide of battle in Israel’s favor. Just dwell on that for a moment.
Now, as a Christian, make the all-important connection as it pertains to you. The God who was able to enlist hornets on behalf of His people is the same God who is able to use anything in all creation to fulfill His good purposes for you. The Creator’s inventory and His creativity to use it, is endless.
On this side of life, the earthly side, it’s easy to focus on limitations. How will we be able to meet an objective we sense the Lord leading us in? Where will the needed resources come from? How will the seemingly bolted door open? What can clear the way and soften the hardened hearts ahead?
Take heart! God has an answer for all these questions. What’s more, He has a treasury overflowing with all that could ever be needed to fulfill His will. Don’t worry about where, how, or what . . . rest in He who uses hornets to win wars and He who is able to do infinitely above all you could ever ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).
DIG: What’s the significance of God using hornets?
DISCOVER: How should this encourage God’s people today?
DO: Think about a time God used an “unconventional ally” to give you victory. How did that impact your present and future?
