Entering The Promised Land

Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, ‘Command the priests who bear the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.’ Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, ‘Come up from the Jordan.’”—Joshua 4:15-17 (NKJV)

It had finally happened! The children of Israel had shed the wilderness life and entered into a new phase of existence: the Promised Land. They had all safely crossed the great natural barrier of the Jordan River, whose waters had been withheld by God’s supernatural presence.

That is, almost everyone. It only remained for the priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant to come up out of the riverbed to stand alongside the rest of their people on the Promised Side. Now pay close attention to what happens as the priests carrying the Ark do this: “And it came to pass, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet touched the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks as before” (Joshua 4:18 NKJV).

We can’t miss the details given here in God’s Word. It tells us that at the moment when the priest’s feet were up out of the riverbed and on dry land, the river began to flow again!

You can almost hear gasps rippling through the ranks of people as this happened because it was God’s definitive way of saying, “You see, I am with you and I know exactly when to turn the tide of this mighty river for you. I see the last foot of the last man across, and I will withhold the floodwaters until that sole is on dry ground.”

What a powerful picture of God’s perfect timing, and what an encouragement this should be to us! As universal and awesome as He is, not even the slightest detail is lost or overlooked by Him. He knows exactly when everything needs to occur, right down to the millisecond.

Be assured, every event He’s ordained in your life has been kept according to His perfect timing. The moment of your conception, that “chance” encounter at the grocery store, even the unexpected delay that spared you from an accident up ahead—it’s all kept according to God’s perfect timing because He reigns over time.

Rest in the reality that time is never out of control nor is it a formidable foe that’s constantly turned against you. Time is God’s servant, set in motion to accomplish His purposes for His people.
