The Breaking News

So the two men returned, descended from the mountain, and crossed over; and they came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all that had befallen them.”—Joshua 2:23 (NKJV)

The spies that were sent to scout out the Promised Land had fulfilled their mission. They crossed back over the Jordan River and returned to the encampment of Israel.

We can only imagine the anticipation and excitement that must have surged throughout the camp as they awaited the “breaking news” of their report. Would it be good? Would it be bad? Don’t forget that nearly forty years earlier twelve spies were also sent to investigate the land and the report was overwhelmingly discouraging! Here’s what the spies said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has delivered all the land into our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of the country are fainthearted because of us” (Joshua 2:24 NKJV).

The news was good . . . great, in fact! As the spies had experienced first-hand, the word of all God had been on their behalf had spread. Israel’s reputation had been established, the inhabitants heard of their miraculous exploits, and now they quaked at the prospect of their coming.

How great is God! He had done the advance work of weakening the enemy’s will. He had paved the way for their victory, even before a single sword had been lifted. That’s not only true for the ancient Israelites, but it’s true for those of us who follow after Him today, as well.

Although we may not always be able to understand or see it, our God is going ahead of us in life. He who sees the end from the beginning is out in front of us, preparing the way for us to be able to accomplish what He has called us to. The Lord is, at this very moment, orchestrating events, making connections, planting seeds, and opening doors for us that may be days, weeks, even years out in our future. They all play a part in the perfect plan that the Author and Finisher of our faith scripted for us to walk in.

Our part isn’t to know all the details of His infinite dealings . . . we never could! Our part is to simply trust that our God has gone before us, preparing the way of victory, and to step out in faith accordingly. For when we do, we will find that the battle has already been won and has belonged to the Lord all along. That’s breaking news that we cannot hear enough of!
