Wiser Than Angels

His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.”—Ephesians 3:10 (NIV)

If I’m being honest, this is one of the most interesting verses in the New Testament to me. It reveals something so powerful, something so unique, something that I pray we never forget or take for granted. Here it is . . .

As Christ-followers, we have received the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit that lives in us is the “Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead” (Romans 8:11 NIV), the One Jesus promised would “teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you” (John 14:26 NLT). And through the Holy Spirit, God the Father has revealed to us “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived" (1 Corinthians 2:9 NIV)—the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

Because of the Holy Spirit, we have a deep, intimate knowledge of the Lord that transforms us from the inside out into the glorious image of Christ Jesus. Through Him, we have received power to be His “witnesses, telling people about me everywhere . . . to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8 NLT). And according to Paul, our witness doesn’t stop there. . . it makes its way all the way up to the heavenly realms!

In today’s passage, the apostle Paul tells us that the multifaceted, manifold (πολυποίκιλος: “Ultra-diverse, much-variegated; marked with a great variety of colors”) intimate knowledge of the Lord that is revealed to us through the Spirit of truth is made known to the angels through our witness. Through our testimonies, the high angels, whom the apostle Peter describes as longing “to look into” the personal, deep, experiential knowledge of the gospel that we possess through the Spirit (1 Peter 1:12 NIV).

Think about that . . . we who are in Christ possess something that even the angels cannot fathom, that these heavenly beings and authorities wish to look upon and understand more deeply. Church, let us never take for granted what we have been given and Who we have in us! Even if we have lost every earthly possession, every comfort and treasure, and every luxury this world has to offer, we still have EVERYTHING “because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8 NIV).

And let us ensure that what the Spirit has revealed to us and poured into us is being poured out into others. That we don’t keep it all to ourselves, but instead take it everywhere we go and share it with the people around us!
